8:56 Foundation

On Sunday 11th August, The Bridge for Heroes UTD played at Lynn Sports for the 8.56 foundation Time to Talk Football event. 180 players and 18 teams came together for the event, including The Bridge for Heroes.

The 8:56 Foundation aims to raise awareness, and increase the profile and reduce the stigma associated with mental health. By using sport as an aid, the 8:56 Foundation was conceived to encourage men to talk and reduce the risk of loneliness and isolation.

8:56 Foundation story

On 15 April 2021, the world tragically lost Lee Calton to suicide at the age of 37. Lee was an incredibly popular and well respected man. So why the 8:56 Foundation? Lee was a massive football fan, who supported Arsenal and followed his local team King’s Lynn Town FC.

Lee and his friends would catch the 08:56 train out of King’s Lynn Station on a Saturday morning with his friends. These days were filled with laughter, banter, friendship, the occasional beer, and not forgetting the football itself. 8:56 therefore represents something Lee held in such high regard; happy times, fond memories and a group of friends that were always there for each other.

Whilst the 8:56 is a time, it also represents a journey. Just like Lee and his friends on match day, the 8:56 represents strength, support and sense of belonging that can be found in a group. Whether you’re winning or losing, whatever the weather, they turn up regardless.

Big thank you to all of those that came along and supported the team. We hear they won a game!

The team are already looking forward to next year!

Summer Sizzler: Food, Friendship and Farewell!

The sun shone brightly for the much-anticipated 'Summer Sizzler' BBQ event! Greatfood, lively conversation, and heartfelt farewells...

Thanks to our BBQ Master, Andrew, our beneficiaries enjoyed a char-grilled feast of burgers, sausages, buns and salad. Who doesn’t love a BBQ?As always, this event was not just about the food, but was an opportunity for our community to come together, catch up with friends, and to enjoy some healthy Bridge for Heroes banter! Everyone embraced the opportunity for connection over a shared meal. Our beneficiaries with their friends and families, engaged in easy conversation, sharing stories and laughter.

The day was also a bitter-sweet occasion, as we bid farewell to three beloved members: John, Carol, and their faithful companion (and everyones’ favourite volunteer!), Trooper the dog. John and Carol have been cherished members of The Bridge for Heroes, and their contributions to the community will be deeply missed. It will be difficult to fill the gap left by Trooper, with his wagging tail and friendly demeanor, but we wish them well in their future endeavours! The farewell was a poignant reminder of the close-knit bonds that have been formed at The Bridge for Heroes, where each individual is valued and cared for.

As the group gathered to say their goodbyes, there was a shared sense of gratitude for the time spent together and the lasting friendships that have been built. The afternoon had been a resounding success, full of great food, companionship, and the celebration of John, Carol and Trooper. The Bridge for Heroes continues to be a place where people can come together, support one another, and create long lasting friendships and memories.

Our 'Summer Sizzler' was more than just a BBQ event; it was a testament to the resilience, kindness, and unity that defines The Bridge for Heroes.

We’re already looking forward to the next one!
